The school

Húsaskóli opened in 1991. Located in the natural beauty of Keldnaholt, the school uses this unique setting for teaching and outdoor activities.
The school's motto—positivity, respect and cooperation—reflects its work. The school emphasizes creating a positive atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable and all community members show respect in all interactions. The school strongly emphasizes good cooperation among students, parents/guardians and staff.
Húsaskóli is a primary school for students in grades 1 to 7. There are about 145 students and 30 staff members.
The school uses diverse, creative, individualized teaching methods while promoting student collaboration, integrated learning and varied assessment approaches. We also aim to offer a creative learning community with team teaching and competency-based project/theme learning. In recent years, the school has implemented formative learning, where students regularly reflect on their studies with teachers to better approach their learning goals and plan future directions. The goal is for students to succeed, be enthusiastic about their studies and gain the broadest possible knowledge and skills.

Curriculum and operational plan
The general section of the school curriculum and the school's operational plan have largely been combined into a single document called the Húsaskóli Operational Plan. The operational plan is reviewed annually and submitted for official statements to both the Húsaskóli School Council and the Reykjavík School & Recreation Council.
The general section includes information about the school's operations since its founding, key developments, teaching structure, school policies, internal evaluations, improvement plans, development work, home-school cooperation, and collaboration with other education levels and the local community. It also contains various other plans.
School and procedural rules
Schooling, upbringing, and education are broad collaborative efforts of the entire school community. Successful cooperation between home and school is the foundation of effective school operations.
The school follows the Raising for Responsibility educational approach, which encourages individuals to make independent and ethical decisions about their own behavior.
School rules are reviewed annually and shared with parents/guardians. Homeroom teachers also review these rules with students.
School council
The main role of the school council is to be a forum for all representatives of the school community to consult on school matters.
The School Council consists of nine members appointed for two-year terms: two teacher representatives, one staff representative, two student representatives, two parent/guardian representatives, and the principal who leads the council. In addition, the School Council selects a ninth representative from the local community, such as someone involved in youth or recreational activities, a service center, or an individual who has shown interest in school affairs. Alternatively, a third parent may be selected as the ninth representative.

Primary school meals
School meals are free for the 2024-2025 school year. However, the school still needs to track information about allergies and intolerances and limit food waste. Students must register for the school lunch program as before.
Parents/guardians must now register for the school lunch program in the Matartíminn system and select which weekdays their children will eat. Students should choose the same weekdays each week, such as every Tuesday and/or every Thursday. More information and instructions are on the Matartíminn/Abler website.

Parent cooperation
We are all in this together, and as the proverb goes it takes a village to raise a child. Reykjavík City schools make targeted efforts to consult with and increase parent involvement in school activities. All schools in Reykjavík City have an active parent association.

Húsaskóli Student Council
The student council aims to address students' interests and welfare issues. The student council addresses issues such as equality, food, facilities and other matters affecting students.
Evaluation of school activities
Reykjavík City's Department of Education & Youth emphasizes systematic internal assessment at all workplaces. This assessment is an integral part of school and recreational activities. It involves professional reflection and data analysis to evaluate the quality of education and whether intended results have been achieved based on predetermined criteria.
The goal of evaluating and monitoring the quality of work is to provide information about school activities, their results and development. Each school must ensure that its operations comply with laws and regulations.
School self-assessment strengthens operations by identifying strengths and areas that can be improved. This assessment helps good schools become even better.
School districts
There are several school districts in Reykjavík and each child has priority in their district school. Húsaskóli is the district school for residents of the following streets: Baughús, Dalhús, Gagnvegur, Garðhús, Grundarhús, Hlíðarhús, Miðhús, Suðurhús, Sveighús, Vallarhús, Veghús, and Vesturhús.
